DJ Kennedy happy to see St. John's teammate Justin Brownlee flourish in PH

Kennedy, Meralco's reinforcement in the EASL, is proud to see former teammate shine in the Philippines

DJ KENNEDY is happy for his former college teammate Justin Brownlee for the success he is enjoying in the Philippines.

Kennedy and Brownlee were teammates during their days with St. John’s University, and have reacquainted in the Philippines for their respective teams after several years of playing in different parts of the country.

The 6-foot-6 Kennedy is slated to play for Meralco in the East Asia Super League (EASL) while Brownlee is in the middle of Barangay Ginebra’s playoff run in the PBA 49th Season Governors’ Cup.

The 34-year-old Kennedy will play his first game with the Bolts in the EASL on Wednesday when they face Macau Black Bears at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“It’s just good to see a college teammate with journeys go different ways, we haven’t seen each other in years. To be able to catch up in Asia and in the Philippines, it’s great,” said Kennedy of Brownlee.

Kennedy witnessed Brownlee’s heroics in Game Two where he knocked down a three with 10.1 seconds left, bringing Barangay Ginebra to a 104-103 win over Meralco. The Gin Kings eventually swept the Bolts in their Governors’ Cup quarterfinal series.

“It’s just amazing to see how much Justin accomplished and still doing at his age,” said Kennedy, who has his share of titles in the NBA D-League, The Basketball League, Balkan league and in Israel.

“For us to be veterans, he was my college teammate, just to see everything he has done and everything he is still doing, it’s amazing,” said Kennedy.

Brownlee had described his former St. John’s teammate as a winner and a tough player which will definitely help Meralco in their title bid in the EASL. Kennedy said he is glad with how their respective professional careers have panned out.

“I was just talking about like between the both of us how much we’ve won, it’s amazing to see where we’ve come from St. John’s and how much we’ve accomplished, how much we’ve both have success in basketball,” said Kennedy.

He hopes to enjoy the same success with Meralco as it goes up against some of the best teams in Asia in the EASL.

“Looking forward to the opportunity of helping this club, and hopefully, get a championship. It’s a great organization and I’m looking forward to playing,” said Kennedy.

“This team is great, great players, great people in general, the fans, the organization, they’ve welcomed me with open arms. It’s easy to adapt,” Kennedy said.
