ALASKA’S manpower crisis deepened over the weekend when warriors Vic Manuel and the Calvin 'The Beast' Abueva went down with separate knee injuries.
Manuel hurt his knee during the Aces’ 96-95 win over NLEX last Saturday at the San Juan Arena while team officials claim Abueva's knee was hurt in a collision with NLEX import Al Thornton’s special knee brace.
The wide-bodied Manuel is expected to be sidelined for another week while Abueva is expected to return in the team's next game, according to Alaska team manager Dickie Bachmann.
The good news is, Alaska won't see action again until next Tuesday when the Aces play San Miguel Beer in a rematch of the last PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
“We have that long break that could help because si Calvin, he got hit by (Thornton’s) knee brace, so 'yun iyong cause (of the injury) kasi he kept getting hit constantly during the game,” said the Alaska team executive.
Other Alaska players currently sidelined by injuries are veteran center Sonny Thoss, who is still recovering from a partial tear on his right plantar fascia, and playmaker JV Casio (wrist).
Thoss is expected to miss two more weeks as he recuperates from a minor surgery, while Casio could possibly play against the Beermen.
“It’s just partial tear (on Thoss’ injury), but it won’t heal by itself so they (doctors) have to do a procedure,” explained Bachmann.
“Hopefully, the healing process will be faster then just total rest lang. Kawawa naman kasi he only took plain medication (during the Philippine Cup Finals) and yet, he still played well and the series even reached Game Seven,” he added.
“You can’t ask for more from Sonny. Grabe effort niya.”
