ALASKA is among the teams not keen on tapping an Asian reinforcement in the season-ending PBA Governors Cup.
Team manager Dickie Bachman said doing so would mean less playing minutes for another local player.
“We opted not to bring in an Asian import. We would rather give the spot to a Filipino player,” Bachman told Spin.ph.
But that doesn’t mean Alaska is not in favor of the novelty idea introduced by league chairman Patrick Gregorio.
“I appreciate chairman Pato for the innovation. It’s great to try out new ideas and I’m curious how it works out,” said Alaska coach Alex Compton, whose team won’t begin practice for the season-ending meet till next Monday.
What the Aces intend to bring in, however, is an American import who could provide the team with an inside presence.
At the moment, Compton said the team is still finalizing their list of choices.
Compton declined to divulge the names the Aces are considering, although he said they’re looking for someone who can provide inside presence and play the wing position at the same time.
“We have to work with him (import prospect) in his strength. We can’t get a center, but we’re looking for a guy who can play the three and four, and who can play and pound it inside,” he added.
After finishing a strong second in the Philippine Cup behind champion San Miguel Beer, the Aces struggled throughout the mid-season tournament.
Alaska was eventually swept by defending champion Purefoods, 2-0, in the quarterfinals.
