JORDAN Murphy savored his first-ever Manila Clasico game despite Barangay Ginebra coming out on the wrong end of a 112-93 blowout against Magnolia on Sunday night in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Ginebra import had 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in only his second game with the Kings but was held to a 27.8 percent shooting by the Hotshots’ defense. He was held to seven points after scoring 11 in the opening period.
Although the loss sent the Kings reeling to a 3-5 record and in danger of missing the playoffs, the 29-year-old import nonetheless savored the experience of one of the most historied rivalries in the pro league's 50-year history.
Prior to the match-up, Murphy has been told about the rich history of the Ginebra-Magnolia rivalry.
“I feel great. It’s an honor to be here, to be part of this rivalry right now. Obviously, we didn’t perform what we really want to, but it’s an honor to be here and to be able to play in a game like that,” he said.
“They told me that there will be a lot of people here and that people are interested in it,” he added. “But you kind of get the general feeling of how much energy was in the arena there in the game. No matter what the score, you got people yelling and cheering, no matter what. It was good to see.”
Too bad, Murphy didn’t get to experience what a Ginebra celebration feels with a win over Magnolia.
