DERRICK Caracter felt he took a trip down memory lane after KG Canaleta shot the lights out at the Astrodome following a second-half offensive explosion in NLEX’s 94-81 victory over Globalport in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Sunday.
Canaleta torched the Batang Pier with a season-high 29 points built around a 6-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc in 20 minutes of play, prompting Caracter to compare his shooting to the performance of Indiana guard Reggie Miller in the 1995 NBA playoffs between the Pacers and the New York Knicks.
“I thought he was Reggie Miller in ’95,” the new Batang Pier import said, referring to the former Indiana gunner’s famous “six points in nine seconds” shooting during Game One of that memorable Eastern Conference semifinals.
“When somebody’s shooting that well, there’s only so much you can do,” added the replacement of Calvin Warner.
Canaleta felt it was just one of those days.
“Maganda gising,” he said with a smile, before turning serious.
“Nag-double sila sa import namin eh, so kailangan mag-step up,” Canaleta explained as Al Thornton was limited to only 19 points after firing 50 points last time against Ginebra.
“Naging ready lang ako tsaka open shots eh.”
