BATANGAS CITY – Denzel Bowles is not using his illness as an excuse after missing 14 free throws in Rain or Shine’s overtime victory against Columbian on Sunday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Bowles had 29 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists in the Elastopainters’ slim 88-86 victory over the Dyip at the Batangas City Coliseum, but missed 14 of his 21 free throw shots in the game.

Bowles, whose two free throws to force overtime in Game Seven of the 2012 Commissioner’s Cup finals against TNT put him in the league’s annals, said he wasn’t feeling well during the day due to the food he ate after the team stayed here prior to Sunday’s game.

“Yesterday, just the food. Didn’t really sit well so I didn’t really feel as well today,” Bowles admitted after the game. “But it is on me. I can’t miss that many free throws. The food here didn’t really sit well with me.”

Bowles also said the humidity inside the Batangas City Coliseum should also not be an excuse, as he is also happy that his missed free throws didn’t cost his team the victory.

“I’m a ball player, man. I just have to make those shots. I’m just happy that the team helped me out in the end,” said Bowles.

Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia also said Bowles isn’t the kind of player who will make sickness as an excuse.

“Before the game, si Denzel was already not feeling well. He told me before the game na medyo masama pakiramdam niya. He was also frustrated because he was doing his best inspite not feeling well,” said Garcia.

“Probably in his mind right now, it’s not an excuse to miss free throws. I know he can shoot the free throws. Imagine if he made at least half, we could have won the game,” said Garcia.

Bowles expressed relief after the Elastopainters won the game after Rey Nambatac hit a lay-up with two seconds left in overtime.

“Back pick for me, they both came to me, Rey came open and he did what he is supposed to do. He made a big shot,” Bowles said.

After the win, Bowles is looking forward to a good rest.

“Very exhausted. I’m tired. Just need some rest,” said Bowles.
