Two streaks were on the line in Powerade’s game against Rain or Shine on Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Gary David continued one and broke the other.
David became the first player since Danny Seigle in 2006 to score 20 or more points in 19 straight games when he finished with 30 points in a 104-98 victory that ended the Painters’ four-game winning streak in the 2012 PBA Governors’ Cup.
“Gary delivered for us,” Tigers coach Bo Perasol said.
The Lyceum product started hot with 11 points in the first period. Although he cooled down in the middle quarters, Perasol's faith in his top gunner never once wavered.
“It was better judgment that prompted me to still give the ball to Gary,” Perasol said.
David regained his touch in the final stretch had a lot of help from Tigers import Omar Sneed, who had another fine all-around performance with 24 points, 20 rebounds, and seven assists.
Although the Painters also had solid contributions from their top players—import Jamelle Cornley had 31 points and 17 boards and Paul Lee added 15 points—the Tigers found a way to limit them at crunch time.
“We were able to hold down their top players at the most crucial time,” Perasol said.
The Painters threatened for the last time when a Lee jumper made it 94-91 with two minutes and 44 seconds left in the payoff period. But David retaliated with a reverse layup at the other end to seal the win.
The Tigers, who led all the way, won for the third time in five games.
