GAME 3 of the San Miguel-Phoenix PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series proved to be just as physical as the two previous outings of the best-of-seven series.
By halftime of Sunday’s game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, two flagrant fouls had already been whistled including an F2 infraction on big man Dave Marcelo that led to his ejection early in the second quarter.
Marcelo went straight to the dugout after he was caught hitting Christian Standhardinger on the face as the San Miguel big man was going baseline for a basket.
Earlier, Matthew Wright received an F1 after whacking Von Pessumal when he tried to get away from the young wingman’s leech-like defense. The Phoenix main man was forced to sit out for three minutes following the violation.
Commissioner Willie Marcial said Marcelo will be summoned by his office with a possible fine to be meted against him.
Calvin Abueva was in the middle of the action, of course.
‘The Beast’ was called for a technical foul in the second period after forcibly pulling his arm away from Arwind Santos as the two got entangle during a loose ball situation.
Abueva had been slapped with a P15,000 fine in Game 2 for flashing a dirty finger several times in front of the TV cameras in the aftermath of a physical play involving him and Standhardinger, who in turn, was called for an F2 and ejected. Standhardinger received a P20,000 fine.
RJ Jazul meanwhile, had to be attended to by team physician at the break after being left with a bloodied nose courtesy of an accidental headbutt by Pessumal.
Phoenix had a total of 19 fouls after the first half, with Jayson Perkins and Wright each carrying three fouls each.
San Miguel meanwhile, only has 14 fouls although with three fouls each were Santos and Terrence Romeo.
