CHRISTIAN Standhardinger was not after any scoring record, but only reacting on the kind of defense Meralco was giving him.
“You know I’m not thinking about that. I’m just trying to read where the right decision is and find the right man. Just trying to do that. So you don’t think about statistics-related stuff,” the veteran Fil-German stressed Sunday after Game 2 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals between Barangay Ginebra and Meralco.
Standhardinger came away with a career-high 41 points in a 103-91 loss at the Mall of Asia Arena as the other Kings failed to back him up in scoring.
The 6-foot-8 Fil-German also added 11 rebounds and four assists as he tried to keep the fight for Ginebra when he scattered 10 out of his total output in the final quarter.
But again he made it clear his career-best was not done on purpose.
“Like I said the help (defense) was not coming, so I just kept being aggressive,” said Standhardinger. “I think in the first game, the help was coming and so I passed it out (the ball).”
He had 14 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in the series opener which the Kings won, 92-88.
Despite him becoming just the third Ginebra player in franchise history to score in the 40s at the expense of Meralco, Standhardinger still gives credit to Meralco’s defense.
“Meralco is such a tough team, you’ve got to give them respect. They grind it out, and they played efficient basketball which is sometimes not the prettiest, but is very effective. We just got to make adjustment in the next game,” he said.
