PBA Governors’ Cup best import Jamelle Cornley has finally been released on Monday night after spending five days including the entire Lenten break in jail.
The 6-6 former Penn State stalwart was incarcerated after running amok in a hotel in Quezon City where he reportedly smashed a computer, flower vases, granite tiles and the bar’s glass door on Wednesday after allegedly losing US$1,400 to three prostitutes.
The former Rain or Shine Elasto Painters import was initially slapped with five charges: alarm and scandal, malicious mischief, direct assault, disrespect to police authorities, and resisting arrest.
After an inquest on Wednesday, Cornley was cleared of the three charges.
But after posting a P14,000 bail for the two remaining charges he is facing, Judge Marcelino Sta. Cruz finally issued the release order of Cornley, who was detained at the Camp Karingal Criminal and Detection Unit in Quezon City.
Rain or Shine team Governor Atty Mamerto Mondragon did not hide his disappointment over the incident, but insisted that the Asian Coatings franchise nonetheless gave their full support on Cornley.
“May pinagsamahan kami eh. Syempre, hindi namin siya iiwan. Pero sabi ko nga sa kanya, paglabas niya sa kulungan ngayon, bahala na siya,” said Mondragon of the import who helped Rain or Shine win its first PBA championship last season.
“Ilang araw din kaming nahilo sa kaka-ayos sa kaso niya, ngayon nga hindi pa kami kumakain,” said Mondragon.
The first day of work week became another test of patience for Cornley as brownout hit Camp Karingal the whole day.
“May pumutok na transformer, kaya kanina pang 10:30 ng umaga mainit dito, nag-iinit na nga ang ulo ni Cornley kanina pa,” said a police officer assigned at the CDU cell.
Cornley refused to speak to the media and immediately rode the black SUV that awaited him.
Rain or Shine team manager Boy Lapid said the team has already asked Cornley to face all the charges.
“Hindi muna siya makakaalis, talagang sinabihan namin siya na harapin niya muna lahat ng kaso,” bared Lapid as Cornley’s Sunday flight to the US has already been rebooked indefinitely.
“Mabait naman iyan si Jamelle, sising sisi nga siya kasi talagang dinanas niya ang hirap, isipin mo limang araw siya sa kulungan. Lahat nakabakasyon, siya nakakulong,” added Lapid.
Meanwhile, Rain or Shine management is now in close coordination with the QCPD to pin down the three prostitutes Cornley picked up in Quezon avenue who he claimed stole his money.
