TNT consultant Mark Dickel is implementing a strict diet program with the goal of helping the KaTropa reach their full potential.
Recently hired by TNT out of New Zealand to institute changes in the team not just on the court but off it, Dickel has implemented a no-carbohydrates diet to keep the players in top shape in a lengthy PBA season.
“It’s just trying to get them in the best possible shape that they can be,” said Dickel after the KaTropa improved to 2-0 win-loss since his arrival by overcoming a 23-point deficit on the way to a 104-102 win over NorthPort.
“It’s a little bit difficult for the players over here because they play all year round. Most of the countries have a real offseason. Over here, they are expected to keep playing all year round, day after day, month after month.”
Even the coaching staff is under the strict diet program, TNT coach Bong Ravena and team manager Virgil Villavicencio bared.
“He is very healthy,” Ravena said when reporters asked about Villavicencio’s health in jest. “In fact, naka-diet kami. No carbs.”
Aside from decreasing the carbo intake of the players, Dickel said he has shortened the practice of the team.
“For me, it’s trying to make practices a little bit shorter but focusing on what they are eating and what they are not eating. There has been a focus on diet but it’s just them increasing their intensity in practice so that they can be in better, better shape,” said Dickel.
“That has been the key. Just trying to make sure to be focused, disciplined, and hopefully, it transfers to the court,” he added.
