PETRON playmaker Alex Cabagnot made a quick impression in his first two games of the season since tearing his plantar during last season’s PBA Governors Cup Finals.
The heady guard banged in 10 points in his first game this season, including a running jump shot in the dying seconds to tow Petron to a pulsating 90-88 win over a fighting Air21 side on December 11.
The lefty Cabagnot followed up his strong comeback with a 17-point performance, which include 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc, to carry the Boosters to a 77-73 win against the Meralco Bolts in the season’s very first road game in Dipolog City.
The former University of Hawaii-Hilo stalwart’s gutsy showing earned him the Accel PBA Press Corps Player of the Week citation for the period covering December 9-14, besting a pool of strong contenders led by Boosters teammate June Mar Fajardo, Barangay Ginebra’s Mac Baracael, Japeth Aguilar and rookie Greg Slaughter as well as Globalport’s Solomon Mercado.
Petron coach Gee Abanilla shared that Cabagnot’s return gave his injury-ravaged team an added threat on the floor after starting the season with five players on the injured list.
“Alex really gave us a different dimension to our game ever since he came back, noting that he’s been working really hard on his pick and roll game,” said Abanilla of his prized point guard.
Petron is the lone unbeaten team in the tournament so far with its immaculate 7-0 win-loss record.
Abanilla also commended his prized court general for working hard to get back in game shape.
“I like the way he’s been winning his mental battle from his injury, proving to be one of the leaders of this team, which we really need,” added the Petron mentor, whose team finished a strong second in last season’s PBA Governors Cup Finals.
