COLUMBIAN scored a stunning upset over San Miguel in overtime, 134-132, on Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Dyip trio of Lester Prosper, CJ Perez, and Rashawn McCarthy propelled their team to victory as they improve their card to 2-6, snapping a three-game losing skid.
Columbian also won against last conference’s champion Beermen for the second consecutive time as they survived the match after Arwind Santos sent the game into overtime with a three with 1.1 seconds left in regulation.
Prosper had 40 points and 13 rebounds, while Perez added 34 points for the Dyip. McCarthy, meanwhile, also hit big shots in the game, contributing 27 points and dishing out 14 assists for Columbian.
Glenn Khobuntin had eight points, and hit the dagger with 42.4 seconds left in overtime after converting a triple to give the Dyip a 132-128 lead.
“I give credit to the players, even though we were losing three straight, at least nandoon pa rin sila,” said Columbian coach Johnedel Cardel. “Going into the San Miguel game, this is a champion team. Sabi ko, if we play together, we play patience in our offense, if we play hard on defense, nothing is impossible.”

The Dyip started out strong with an 18-8 lead in the first period. They were able to maintain the gap after a 9-0 run that was capped by a lay-up by Perez for an 84-70 lead with 3:50 left in the third.
Despite a rally by the Beermen that put them ahead, 102-101, the Dyip didn’t collapse as they were able to regain the lead, 114-109. However, with Columbian up by three points following a jumper by Khobuntin, Santos buried a triple that tied the game at 118, bringing the thrilling game into overtime.
Still, Columbian was able to weather the storm with McCarthy and Khobuntin hitting shots, and Perez maintaining the four-point lead late in the game with a lay-up, 134-130.
