RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao admitted Wayne Chism’s lack of heft needs to be addressed if the Elasto Painters are to top their runner-up finish last year in this PBA season's Commissioner’s Cup. And when it comes to bulk, ROS big man Beau Belga is more than willing to help.
In his first game this conference, the ROS import looked thinner than he was in the last midseason tournament where he was named Best Import and led the team to a finals stint.
“Hindi ko alam bakit nga yung iba habang nagkaka-edad, tumataba eh, pero si Wayne, pumapayat eh,” Guiao said of the 28-year-old American slotman in jest before turning serious.
“We need some bulk,” he said. “Of course, we have Beau (Belga)… but it will be a problem for us because physically, Wayne may not be a match for the big, strong guys we have as imports.”
Belga, one half of the Extra Rice Inc., is hardly worried of Chism’s current built, saying they have his back.
“Kahit payat si Wayne, nandito naman kami,” the ROS enforcer said. “May mga backup naman eh. Talagang magre-rely kami sa laki at lapad namin.”
“Talagang tulungan ‘tong conference na ‘to para sa amin at walang sukuan,” he added.
Belga instead focused on the positive side of Chism getting slimmer as the 6-foot-9 big man has become quicker on the court.
“Mas napaganda pa nga kay Wayne dahil bumilis siya,” he said. “Kailangan lang yung rhythm ng laro niya (mag-improve).”
