RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao is urging Antoine Wright to show more leadership and aggressiveness while he remains the team’s import in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Wright registered 21 points, but took 20 attempts to reach his total and was scoreless in the payoff period as the Elasto Painters lost to Alaska, 128-102, on Saturday night.
“He played a little better tonight, but it’s not enough for us to win games,” Guiao said. “He should exert some leadership in moments na nagshu-shut down kami mentally.”
Wright did have 11 boards, five steals, and three assists in 38 minutes.
“What we needed from him was the leadership, yung making the right play at the right time,” Guiao said of the NBA veteran. “At medyo mababa yung percentage niya. I felt that with his ability, he could take anyone to the basket, but he preferred to shoot the jump shots.”
While the E-Painters are sticking with Wright for now, Guiao is open to making another replacement, although he ruled out Wayne Chism for a return as he will be sidelined for at least the next month by a hamstring injury.
“If we’re going to consider somebody else, it can’t be Wayne,” Guiao said. “For now, we are focused on our Friday game against NLEX and ang nasa isip namin is we will still have Antoine.
“But we still have to consider backup plans,” he was quick to add. “Ganun talaga pag natatalo.”
The E-Painters were listless in their latest loss as they allowed the Aces to pull away in the third quarter.
“Nung nakabalik sila (Alaska), we totally lost our drive,” Guiao said. “It’s hard to pinpoint what caused it. But’s it’s a mental shutdown.”
“It doesn’t happen to us often, but it did tonight,” he added.
