RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao rued Japeth Aguilar’s block that he felt was a clear goaltending violation late in their 101-87 loss to Ginebra in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday night.
With the E-Painters down by 11 points at the three-minute, 42-second mark, Aguilar rejected Dior Lowhorn’s shot that looked on its way down. The non-call that Guiao complained about led to his ejection for a second successive game.
“I thought it was an obvious goaltend,” Guiao said. “Everybody in the stadium thought it was goaltending, the only one who did not see it was goaltending was the referee. Nagalit ako kasi sabi ko review niyo, nung ni review sabi, ‘Sorry, coach goaltending talaga’. (Sabi ko) eh ikaw lang ang hindi nakakaalam na goaltending yun eh.”
“i just got pissed off na everybody except the person who should know that it was a goaltending did not know that it was a goaltending,” the outspoken coach added.
More than the controversial non-call, Guiao is concerned about his team’s up-and-down performance at this juncture of the season-ending tournament.
“I’m a little worried because by this time, our sixth game in the elims, by this time we should be peaking,” the champion coach said. “Three-three is not really bad, but were not just used to being in this situation at this point.”
“Ang nangyayari nag-sa-slide kami, so this will require urgent measures,” he added. “I will talk to the coaching staff on Tuesday and we will deliberate about the team’s situation.”
Guiao cited his players’ inconsistent showing as a factor.
“Both our locals and our import have not been consistent, so we cannot pin this down on the import, (alone),” Guiao said. “Our locals have to take some of the responsibility.”
“But ang tingin kong wala samin, we’re not as cohesive as last conference, we don’t have the chemistry,” he admitted after leading the team to the championship in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Guiao recalled his team, despite having the lowest-scoring import in Pierre Henderson-Niles, had little problem with their offense, unlike this conference where they have a reinforcement averaging over 20 points, yet can’t produce enough offense to keep winning.
“I don’t have the exact answer right now, but towards the end of the week after consulting with the coaching staff, mas maliliwanagan kami,” Guiao said.
