RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao felt the PBA All-Star break left his team rusty in its Governors’ Cup game against Meralco on Wednesday night.
Coming off a layoff of almost two weeks, the Elasto Painters were sluggish as they allowed the Bolts to make an early run on the way to the one-sided 109-102 victory.
“My worst fear was that the long break was going to affect us and it did,” Guiao said after emerging from the dugout after a long meeting with his staff. “We were just out of timing, had low energy, and we couldn’t get our defense going.”
The E-Painters let the Bolts convert 46 of their 83 shots for a blistering 55 percent from the field and allowed their opponents to score in triple digits after limiting their opponents to just 90.5 points in their two-game winning streak.
“There was no semblance of defense on our side, so we have to take responsibility for that and we have to fix that problem in the next two days,” Guiao said as his team takes the court anew on Saturday.
“Our offensive execution was also lacking,” he was quick to add. “We couldn’t get the ball to the import.”
ROS reinforcement Dior Lowhorn led the team with 25 points, but could’ve scored more as he took only 12 shots, while Meralco counterpart Allen Durham attempted 23 shots and scored 32 points.
“That discrepancy, alone, cost us a lot of opportunities,” Guiao said. “If we could have lessened yung attempts nung kabila and nadagdagan kami ng konti, baka nagkaroon ng affect sa laro.”
“It’s not his fault that the ball did not get to him,” he added of Lowhorn. “The locals couldn’t get him the ball. We have to give credit to the defense, but I felt that even with the defense, he could’ve gotten four or five more touches easily dahil nakikita ko na libre siya pero hindi nakakarating."
Still, Guiao remains upbeat of his team’s chances, going as far as saying they remain Final Four contenders despite their 2-2 win-loss start.
“I have the feeling that it’s only the effect of the long break. Once we get our bearings back, we can get going and still find our way to the semifinals,” Guiao said.
