SAN Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria believes Alaska’s strange strategy to open Game Seven of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals went against the Aces’ favor.
While admitting they were surprised by the Aces’ move to call three quick timeouts and virtually change their starting lineup after tip-off, Austria feels it didn’t work as the Beermen still went ahead and maintained the lead.
“Our impression is that they were trying to disrupt our game plan,” Austria said. “Nagulat din kami. Maybe it backfired kasi in the endgame nawalan sila ng timeout.”
Still, the champion coach was still dumbfounded on how they pulled off the greatest comeback in league history.
“Di ko lubos maisip itong comeback namin,” Austria said. “We know from the start ang gusto lang namin manalo ng isa para di ma-sweep.”
He even thought that the law of averages would catch up with them after they knotted the series with three straight wins.
“When we leveled the standings at three-three I told them this was it,” Austria admitted. “But I didn’t want to believe at that time because I wanted to be positive.”
“Di ko alam paano kami nakabalik,” he added. “But nagkarioon sila ng sense of urgency. Because of our experience last season, they know how to lose and how to win, especially in the championship.”
