STAR coach Jason Webb insisted Ian Sangalang’s minimal playing time against San Miguel Beer on Sunday night was merely due to matchup purposes for SMB import Tyler Wilkerson.
Sangalang, who averaged 11.1 minutes and 3.4 points in his first eight games, played less than five minutes and wound up scoreless after taking just one shot in the blowout loss to the Beermen.
Import Ricardo Ratliffe, Marc Pingris, Jake Pascual, and Rafi Reavis took turns in defending Wilkerson, who still finished with 44 points built around eight three-pointers.
“We tried to put different guys on him,” Webb said of the prolific SMB reinforcement.
“Maybe if Ian played more, maybe he could’ve matched up with him (Wilkerson), but we felt we put our best guys that could guard him,” the rookie mentor was quick to add.
Whoever shadowed Wilkerson failed as the Hotshots also found no answer to Marcio Lassiter’s hot shooting.
“We got our butts kicked,” Webb said. “There’s a reason that team has won three of the last four championships.”
