JASON Perkins nailed the go-ahead three-pointer as Phoenix Pulse completed a thrilling 89-87 comeback victory over Magnolia on Wednesday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Fuel Masters fell behind by as many as 17 points and still trailed 85-87 in the endgame before the sophomore forward out of La Salle buried a corner trey and added a free throw to secure the team's third successive win.
Paul Lee completed a three-point play with 33.4 seconds remaining to give Magnolia an 87-85 lead. But the shifty guard turned the ball over once and missed a potential game-winning three-point attempt in the dying seconds.
“Eto ‘yung gustong gusto naming panalo, ‘yung may character,” said Phoenix Pulse coach Louie Alas after the league-leaders' eighth win in nine games overall.
Calvin Abueva had 24 points and 13 rebounds, RJ Jazul added 19 points and Wright scored 14 points including the three-pointer with 47.6 seconds left that put the Fuel Masters ahead for the first time in the fourth quarter, 85-84.
It was a sorry defeat for Magnolia, which looked on pace to follow up its first victory of the season in Cagayan De Oro after leading, 41-24, in the second quarter.
“Easily, puwede na kaming mag-fold. Grabe ‘yung turnovers namin. As early as first half, 20 na ata ‘yung turnovers namin. ‘Yung huli, two or three turnovers na lang kami,” said Alas.
The Hotshots fell to 1-4.
Lee and Mark Barroca had 16 points each and hit two treys each in the second quarter to help Magnolia post a 17-point lead.
