SCOTTIE Thompson provided the game's biggest play for Barangay Ginebra late in Game Five with his offensive rebound and three-pointer, but Christian Standhardinger also delivered big baskets on Easter Sunday.

Standhardinger continued to give Ginebra another player who can provide the offense in the ongoing PBA Governors’ Cup Finals, finishing with 13 points for the Gin Kings after Meralco came within one point, 98-97.

None of those points were bigger than the back-to-back field goals Standhardinger made which formed part of a seven-point swing that pushed Ginebra’s lead to 105-97 with 2:17 left in the contest.

“Two really crucial ones,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone after the 115-100 victory over Meralco. “He is knocking down his jumpers and that’s awesome because that adds a weapon to his game. People can’t just sit in the paint on him.”

      Hard work pays off

“He works really hard on his shot. You can’t believe how hard he works. He comes in and probably gets up 300, 400 shots every practice. He gets all the coaching advice on form and stuff so he is trying all these different things,” said Cone.

Standhardinger is now averaging 14.6 points in the best-of-seven finals as Ginebra moved on the cusp of winning its 14th championship overall - and fourth in the Governors Cup the past five years, all at the expense of Meralco.

The former No. 1 draft pick said he was only trying to contribute while playing within the offense of Cone.

“I knew we needed something. We needed something and I just wanted to play within the offense of coach Tim and then they gave me that shot and I took it. Sometimes, it goes in. Sometimes, it doesn’t go in. Just give your best.

That’s what my mother always told me, to give your best. I have to give it my best shot and I’m happy that it went in and I was able to contribute to our victory today,” added the 32-year old Fil-German big man.
