CHRIS Tiu showed his leadership skills not just on but also off the court.

Before showing the way for Rain or Shine down the stretch in the team’s 90-84 win over Meralco in the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday night, the veteran playmaker initiated a players-only meeting on the eve of the game to clarify reports on three key players requesting to be traded.

Tiu didn’t mention if they talked to Beau Belga and Jericho Cruz, but confirmed he got through Raymond Almazan in a coffee session after practice.

“We were able to settle it yesterday,” Tiu said after the game. “We were able to sit down with the veterans. We sat down with Raymond. We had nice talk and we were able to hear him and see what’s on his mind, same thing with the coaching staff.

“It’s very petty. It’s really a non-issue that was blown out of proportion,” he added.

After presiding over the meeting and having everybody on the same page, Tiu then led the E-Painters against the Bolts, scoring six of his team’s last nine points, and 13 of his team-high 18 points in the payoff period.

“It’s one thing to focus on your game and make sure you’re fit and ready, but again, it’s a team sport and everybody plays a significant role it and we can’t let one member be left behind,” the Ateneo product said.

“If there’s one member who is out of sync, or his confidence is a bit low, then we have to support him and encourage him and show him that we’re behind him no matter what," he added.

“I think that’s the positive thing that came out with the help of veteran players, management and coaching staff,” Tiu continued. “We were able to clarify any misunderstandings and clear the air whatever so called destructions there are and just focus on this game.”
