CHRIS Tiu said Wednesday’s game was just the game that he needed after struggling to find his form to start off the PBA Governors’ Cup campaign.
In Wednesday’s 120-98 win over NorthPort, Tiu was not only impressive, he delivered a career game in scoring when he pumped in 23 points to lift the Elastopainters to their second consecutive win.
Tiu said Wednesday’s game was definitely a confidence booster going forward.
“I needed this game because I’ve been struggling in the last few games,” said Tiu, who was entering Wednesday’s game averaging just 2.4 points per outing. “This team relies on me offensively so I’m happy that I was able to get some rhythm today.”
But Tiu said he was not only the one who got a rhythm going in the game as a team effort got Rain or Shine the victory that boosted its hopes of a quarterfinal berth after a shaky start.
“But not only me. I think the starters set the tone early. Beau was playing well offensively, James, even Mav, everybody contributed today. I’m happy we pulled off the win because we needed this one. It gives us hope,” said Tiu.
Tiu admitted his stint with the national team in the Asian Games had something to do with his struggles since he was not able to rest for the Governors’ Cup. But that’s all in the past now for Tiu.
“Actually, the funny thing is I didn’t change anything. My routine is the same, my mental preparation, my nutrition, and everything was the same. Maybe I’m a little bit tired because of last conference and then playing for the national team, plus my other commitments. A lot of things going through my mind that I have to deal with. Usually, basketball is my outlet and I kinda leave everything behind on the court.
“But sometimes, when you are thinking of too many things, it carries over so I’m just trying to relax a bit. We have a few more games to go in this conference, try to get as much rest as I can, and get a rhythm going. I thank the Lord that today was a won game for us. Everybody is quite confident offensively,” said Tiu.
Tiu scored 15 points in the fourth quarter as Rain or Shine maintained a lead that swelled as big as 25 points to pick up the win. Tiu said the team played with a no-tomorrow attitude knowing that another loss could hurt their playoff chances.
“Wala nang bukas eh. Kailangan nang ibigay lahat. I had to take my usual shots. There were times that I hesitated a bit. Linabanan ko lang utak ko na that’s not how it was supposed to be. Coach Caloy, he kept me in the game and thankfully I was able to deliver. NorthPort, they fought hard, they were undermanned. But they hung in there and give us a little scare. Luckily, we were able to keep our composure and pull off the win,” said Tiu.
Following back-to-back wins over Barangay Ginebra and NorthPort, Tiu hopes Rain or Shine will be able to pick up more wins despite a hectic schedule.
“We are 2-4 now. We have too many games in the next few days. Almost every playing date, may game kami. Hopefully, we can get something started and give us a good fighting chance to make it to the playoffs,” said Tiu.
