LIKE how they react about personal accolades, Chris Ross and Alex Cabagnot also deflect talk when it comes to how big a bonus they are going to receive after orchestrating San Miguel Beer’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup championship run at the expense of TNT KaTropa.
Asked for at least a ballpark figure on the financial windfall they are expected to get from team owner Ramon S. Ang, Ross politely declined to divulge the exact amount, but compared it to the previous bonuses they got.
“We haven’t got it yet, but they told us (how much),” Ross said after the victory party at the San Miguel Corp. compound on Wednesday night. “It’s good.”
“It’s enough…to enjoy,” he added with a devious chuckle.
Pressed to compare the amount, the SMB star playmaker said it was roughly as much as their previous bonuses.
“It’s about the same as the others (previous bonuses), but it’s always good,” the Filipino-American playmaker said. “Anytime you win and the boss gives you a bonus, it’s always good.”
Recent title conquests by San Miguel group squads including Ginebra, according to team insiders, merited bonuses equivalent to nine times of each player’s respective salaries, which are capped at P420,000.
With SMB’s recent championship ending a 17-year title drought in midseason tournaments and coming at the expense of a corporate archrival, expect the windfall to at least be as much.
“Those (bonuses) are going to come, because we won, but whatever it is, it’s not going to beat this feeling of just winning the championship,” Cabagnot said.
