CHRIS Ross was inconsolable as he took full responsibility for San Miguel's 92-90 Game Four defeat to Phoenix on Sunday in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup semifinals.

With the Beermen staring at a two-point deficit, the defensive specialist had a chance to win the game but botched his late three-point attempt as the Fuel Masters trimmed SMB's lead to 2-1 in their best-of-seven series.

But Ross' regrets are not so much about that miss but more on the 'foolish' fouls he committed in the endgame which he felt negated his eight-point, five-assist performance for the Beermen.

He was whistled for a foul when he went for a steal against Matthew Wright with 49.6 seconds remaining, and once again sent the Fil-Canadian shooter to the stripe with 26.6 ticks left. Both resulted in four Wright freebies.

"I'm not even thinking about the shot. (I'm thinking about) the two foolish fouls before that which gave them points. In that situation, we gotta make 'em earn it, and I didn't. I just fouled and put 'em on the line," he rued, hitting his head in disappointment.

"The shot is secondary. It would've been nice if it went in, but the two foolish plays before that kinda didn't give my defense a chance to get a stop, and it's just stupid on my part."

As tough as the loss was to swallow for Ross, he found a silver lining in the fact that San Miguel made life tough for Phoenix despite Marcio Lassiter sitting out with back spasms.

"I mean, y'all know what kind of team we have. We have a chance," he said. "I just let my team down today, so all that other stuff really doesn't matter."

San Miguel still leads the series, 2-1, with Game Four set on Tuesday at Cuneta Astrodome, but Ross feels bad to see the Beermen throw away a golden opportunity to move up 3-0 in the Final Four series.

"Whenever you have the opportunity to play, you gotta do your best and try to win no matter what's going on off the court," Ross said. "We had the opportunity to take a stranglehold of the series, and we let that slip."
