CHRIS Ross exploded for 10 three-pointers to help San Miguel overhaul a 29-point Rain or Shine lead and win comfortably, 117-105, on Monday night in Game Two of their PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal series.
Known more for his defensive prowess than his shooting, Ross suddenly couldn't seem to miss from beyond the arc in a bizarre turnaround that saw the Beermen rebound from a 44-15 deficit and end up winning by a mile.
Ross finished with 34 points, shattering his previous career-high 31 set against TNT in Game Four of the 2017 Philippine Cup. His 10 treys tied the franchise record set by Marcio Lassiter in 2015 for most three-pointers in a game.
Now up 2-0, the Beermen can complete a sweep of Rain or Shine and book a second finals appearance this season with another win in Game Three on Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
“This game is unbelievable,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria. “I’m really surprised what happened."
The game was indeed unbelievable in every sense of the word.
Rain or Shine looked headed to a vengeful win as it started the game hitting seven triples to take a 34-13 lead. They still had a 47-18 lead early in the second quarter.
The Beermen were able to cut the deficit to 17 points, 51-34, before hitting five consecutive threes, three coming from Ross, to trail by only three at the half, 52-49.
Ross hit back-to-back threes for a 67-60 lead and it was all San Miguel from there. He ended up missing just six threes.
In total, the Beermen hit 18 threes in the game.
“We were down 29 points and all of a sudden, we were able to catch up and take the lead. I really don’t know what transpired during the game,” Austria said.
Chris McCollough scored 22 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and provided the game's highlight dunk, catching a lob pass from Alex Cabagnot and slamming it home in a third quarter that saw the Beermen outscore the Elastopainters, 40-21, in that quarter.
Carl Montgomery had 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Rey Nambatac had 15 points for Rain or Shine, which hit 17 threes in the game.
