CHRIS Newsome believes Meralco has reason to be happy despite its woeful record in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The stunning 82-72 victory over Rain or Shine on Wednesday not only snapped the Bolts’ six-game skid, but already tripled the Bolts winning total in their last all-Filipino conference where they lost all but one of their games.
“We already have two wins more than our previous Philippine Cup,” Newsome, who led the Bolts with 19 points and six assists against the Elasto Painters, said.
“It’s just great for the morale of the team to finally get a win, finally get that monkey off our back and know we’re doing something right,” he added as the Bolts got back on track with a third win in 10 games.
The Bolts are also still mathematically alive in the playoff race, although they’re fate is no longer entirely in their hands.
“The only thing we’re in control of right now is winning our last game against Star and everything else is kind of out of our hands,” New some said. “We just got to hope for the best situation. We just got to focus on what we can control and that’s our effort in practice and attention to detail when it comes to games.”
“Focus on the things we need to improve on, whether the rest of the conference or next conference,” he added. “It’s a long season, so we don’t just want to shut down and let everything that we’ve done go to waste. We just want to keep building and keep improving.”
