SAN Miguel Beer wingman Chris Lutz admitted taking a “dumb” desperation heave in the waning seconds of regulation of an 88-82 overtime loss to Alaska in Game One of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals on Wednesday night.
With the game tied at 74 and still over three second left, the Filipino-American guard gained possession after a JV Casio miss but took a hurried attempt from the backcourt instead of suing for time or taking a higher-percentage shot.
“A very dumb shot by me at the end (of regulation) there,” Lutz, a three-year PBA veteran, told Spin.ph after the game. “I should’ve called timeout or pushed it for a shot.”
That one boo-boo proved a dampener for an otherwise impressive performance that saw Lutz register a game-high 24 points, four boards, and four assists in 42 minutes.
“I didn’t think there was enough time left, obviously,” he added.
SMB coach Leo Austria refused to pin the blame on his Fil-Am forward.
"We should've called timeout, but sometimes hindi nakikita ng player (yung oras)," he said.
Still, Lutz believes the Beermen wouldn’t have needed to be in that tight situation had they protected a huge double-digit lead throughout the game.
“Really tough game after being up by that much in the first half. We just let them back in with way too many turnovers,” he said. “Their pressure was outstanding, of course, and they had timely threes and offensive rebounds.”
