AFTER a brief detour in the MPBL, Chris Gavina is finally back in the PBA after being named as an assistant to Caloy Garcia in Rain or Shine.
But Gavina shared that there's one factor that almost had him back out from the deal.
Normally seen wearing a suit during his days with Mahindra and Kia, the youthful mentor jokingly rued the missed opoortunity to get to wear that again on the sidelines.
"I think just the ability to just grow. Now, I have an opportunity to really learn from a great teacher right here in coach Caloy. He won't let me wear my jacket so, I'm kind of hesitant," said Gavina.
"No coats allowed! But I'm good, I'm happy."
Immediately after his appointment, Gavina wasted no time in trying to learn from Garcia as he joined Gilas practices for the first time on Friday evening.
Though in no official capacity with the national team, Gavina still spent time with the squad as he had some individual workouts after the practice with Alex Cabagnot and Troy Rosaril.
"I just told coach Caloy that any opportunity to get to start learning his teaching patterns and mannerisms, I'll take it," said Gavina.
"He's really open to me going here and see how he does things. I hope it translates to me as I transition to his coaching staff," he added.
It's one thing to see a collection of talent this good on paper, but seeing them work in person just leaves Gavina awestruck.
"Being around all this talent is tremendous. Just seeing how these guys work with each other, been looking forward to them playing against Iran and Kazakhstan."
