NATIONAL coach Chot Reyes said any changes to the lineup of Gilas Pilipinas bound for the Fiba World Cup in Spain and the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea will depend on how much time the team will be given to prepare for the two tournaments.
Speaking on the sidelines of the PSA Awards Night where Gilas was feted with the Athlete of the Year honor, Reyes said he will likely keep the team that finished second to Iran in the last Fiba-Asia championships if the PBA board sticks with its plan for a one-month buildup for the national squad.
But Reyes said he is open to forming another pool and eventually making changes to the lineup should the board grant his request for a three-month training camp for the two tournaments.
“If they’ll just give us one month, eh di na tayo puwede magpalit. But if they give us three months, then maybe, we can get a pool together and see who can make it,” said Reyes, who plotted the country's return to the world championships for the first time since 1978.
Reyes' plans now hinge on a meeting with the entire PBA board in its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, which the Gilas coach has been invited to attend to present his program for Gilas.
But even that is shrouded in confusion, Reyes said, since his plans will depend on how much time he will be given for Gilas' training camp.
“They (PBA board) asked me to present a training program. But as for me, I want to know how much time will be given to us before I can present a program,” the multi-titled coach said.
At this time, Reyes said he considers the Gilas team “non-existent” since all the players’ respective commitment and focus is with their PBA mother ball clubs.
“There is no Gilas Pilipinas right now. It’s zero because they (players) are all back with their mother teams (in the PBA),” Reyes told a handful of sports scribes at the Manila Hotel.
