WHILE the Lithuania training camp and scheduled friendly matches against Japan is expected to provide some tough competition for Gilas Pilipinas, coach Chot Reyes is still hoping to find a tournament that can give the national team tournament exposure like its aborted Jones Cup title defense.
“Ang unfinished business ko ngayon is to get a replacement for the Jones Cup,” said Reyes. “Wala pa eh, wala pa rin akong tulog.”
Since learning that Taipei organizers have withdrawn the invitation to the Philippines to join the annual international basketball joust, Reyes said he has been burning the phone lines to find a competitive tournament for Gilas.
The outspoken Gilas mentor said he has also called former Smart Gilas national coach Rajko Toroman to discuss this matter, though he is hopeful that he could soon arrange a tournament and not mere tuneup games for the national team.
“We’ve called him (Rajko) as well, but like I said, we need a tournament and not just tuneup games, as much as possible. Wherever we can find a tournament, we’ll go for it,” added Reyes, who left with the rest of the Gilas team for Lithuania on Sunday evening.
