AFTER declaring an end to his two-year reign as Gilas Pilipinas coach, fans are wondering where Chot Reyes is headed next.
Sources from the Manny V. Pangilinan camp said Reyes will focus on his corporate role in the organization, primarily as head of TV5's sports arm, Sports5, which has kept him busy since Gilas' disappointing seventh-place finish in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.
“Wala pa siyang bagong pwesto. Focus muna siya sa Sports5,” said a high-ranking official of the MVP group.
The official refused to rule out a return to coaching for the five-time PBA Coach of the Year, although he doesn't expect it to happen anytime soon, considering the criticism Reyes has received from fans after the Asiad debacle.
“Baka pagpahingahin muna. Kumbaga pag relaxin muna siya sa TV5,” said the source.
However, officials said Reyes will have plenty of options if he does decide to return to coaching, considering the MVP group has three teams in the PBA - Talk 'N Text, Meralco and NLEX - and a couple of collegiate teams which it is supporting. The same source said he won't be surprised if Reyes one day ends up being a top consultant of the three MVP teams in the PBA.
“Sa stature kasi ni Chot, he gave the company a lot of championships in the PBA with Talk 'N Text, tapos maganda rin naibigay niya sa Gilas bago nga ang campaign sa Asian Games,” he said.
“To be fair naman to Chot, madami rin siyang naibigay kaya he might be given another coaching or consultancy role soon,” he added. On the other hand, chances of Reyes coaching MVP-backed Ateneo were readily played down by Blue Eagles team manager Epok Quimpo, who said the school is likely to stick it out with current mentor Bo Perasol at least until the end of his contract next season.
“Wala. Sa ngayon status quo kami kay Coach Bo. We believe he deserves another season kasi looking at it, our team overachieved nga kasi masyado pang bata ang team namin,” said Quimpo.
“Nadidinig ko rin 'yang kay coach Chot pero wala pang command or advice from the higher ups. So sa tingin ko it will still be Bo,” he said.
Even MVP Sports Foundation president Al Panlilio, who is one of the decision makers in the group, has denied in a previous interview of any plan to move Reyes to Ateneo.
“No. Walang ganun,” said Panlilio.
