DAVAO CITY –GILAS Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes is weighing things up whether to play his national team in full strength or not during the PBA Annual All-Star game considering some of his players are also seeing action in the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup semifinals.
“Di ko alam eh (if he’ll maximize some players) kasi ayoko namang pagurin `yung iba. If I do that, papagurin ko naman `yung ibang lalaro sa Monday. So it’s a very difficult situation,” explained the national coach.
Talk 'N Text's Ranidel de Ocampo, Jason Castro, Jimmy Alapag and Larry Fonacier, Alaska's Sonny Thoss, and Barangay Ginebra's Tenorio are among the members of the national training pool who are all playing in the semifinals.
Reyes will be playing the regular 15-man pool on Sunday against the PBA All-Stars in the main event of the Annual All-Stars.
But come Monday, he’ll be utilizing the cadet pool led by Greg Slaughter, Kevin Alas, Ronald Pascual, Jake Pascual, and Matt Rosser, to join forces with Gary David, Japeth Aguilar, Gabe Norwood and Jeff Chan when the Nationals go up against the visiting Shanghai Sharks at the Mall of Asia Arena.
This developed as Tenorio said it felt good practicing and playing together as one since Gilas Pilipinas was formed three months ago as everyone gets to see how they could possibly blend in with the new additions in the 15-man national pool.
Tenorio, last year’s MVP in the 34th William Jones Cup basketball tournament won by the country, explained that with the addition of big man Marc Pingris, June Mar Fajardo, and Japeth Aguilar, the team now have the added size and speed.
“Maganda ang tinatakbo ng ensayo namin kahapon kasi `yung mga big men namin mabibilis din,” Tenorio told Spin.ph, as Gilas Pilipinas traveled to Digos City on Saturday afternoon for its final practice prior to the All-Star game.
Gilas is preparing for its much-awaited clash with the PBA All-Stars set Sunday at 5 p.m., serving as the culmination of the Annual All-Star festivities at the Davao del Sur Coliseum in Digos City.
“Polishing ng konti kasi sa depensa kasi first time din namin magkasama since noon wala naman kaming chance mag five-on-five,” said the Barangay Ginebra star point guard.
