Chito Victolero says lessons learned in loss to Ginebra will only make Star better

    Apr 9, 2017

STAR doesn’t mind suffering its first loss in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Sunday night.

All it matters are the lessons learned from the 113-98 defeat at the hands of Barangay Ginebra and then look forward to what’s next for the team.

“We learned a lot from this game. It’s a long way to go. We need to refocus again and stay together,” said coach Chito Victolero after the Palm Sunday match at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“Marami pang padating especially yung susunod, San Miguel.”

The Hotshots, who fell to a 4-1 record, were actually enjoying a 67-55 advantage early in the third quarter until the Kings turned it around behind a big 16-2 run to finally take control, 71-69.

    They never recovered from there.

Victolero admitted his team lost it mentally at that point, which he solely blamed upon himself.

“I did not prepare them mentally for this game. The locals knew this is an emotional game,” said the Star coach.

“But pag nasa actual na, medyo nawawala.”

The Hotshots had less assists than the Kings, 32-20, and only made 38 percent of their shots (35 of 93).

Victolero said whatever mistakes they made in the game would help them become an even better team.

“Yun lang ang gusto naming, matuto kaming lahat para at least pagdating ng mga important games, yung mga kailangan naming makuha namin,” he stressed.

"I told the team, let's move forward. Tapos na yan."
