STAR coach Chito Victolero is hoping his wards can learn a thing or two from San Miguel Beer in terms of showing resilience to come back from tough losses.
The Hotshots surrendered a 109-102 decision to the Beermen in Game Four of their PBA Commissioner's Cup playoff on Friday night and got eliminated in the semifinals for the second straight conference.
“Just like last conference, we need to experience this kind of situations, this kind of game, how San Miguel plays, how they are being matured dun sa kung ano man situation ng game,” Victolero said. “I think yun lang ang kailangan naming matutunan – kung papano kami magbo-bounce back following a loss, paano kami magse-settle down sa crunch time, everything,”
The Beermen showed the Hotshots how to recover from tough losses after they shrugged off a 109-105 loss in the series opener by winning the next three games to advance to the finals.
Victolero admitted the Hotshots were still reeling from a Game 3 loss where Marcio Lassiter’s triple broke their hearts and turned the series around – instead of Star moving a win away from the finals.
“Yun nga yung ayaw namin eh – yung mag-dwell ka dun e, so kaya medyo I was telling my players to move forward. Even me, kahit may pain dun, pero kailangan mag-move forward kami,” Victolero said, recounting the Hotshots’ Philippine Cup Final Four series against Ginebra where Star failed to bounce back from a tough Game Six loss to come up with a sluggish performance in the deciding game.
“Yun ang kailangan naming lagpasan, we need to move forward, na mag-over the hump kami sa sitwasyon na yun kasi nga pag nag-dwell kami dun yun ang nangyayari, lagi kaming natatalo sa game,” Victolero said. “Kaya I think experience pa din so maturity pa din.”
Victolero refused to make their lack of experience as a group and the absence of injured stalwart Marc Pingris as excuses for their downfall against the Beermen.
“If there’s always an excuse, ‘di kami maggo-grow,” Victolero said. “Sabi ko sa kanila na no excuses, talo tayo ngayon, but we need to stick together, bounce back, we need to prepare for the next conference and hopefully kung ano man nangyari ngayon malampasan namin.”
Ultimately, Victolero believes the Hotshots’ time will come.
“I think dinadaanan talaga ng mga successful team yan and I believe na we need to get over that hump in order for us to win to go to the finals,” Victolero said.
