MAGNOLIA actually played a decent Game One of the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals, according to head coach Chito Victolero.

Victolero, however, rued the second quarter of the Hotshots’ 86-75 loss to Barangay Ginebra on Saturday after his team was unable to respond to the Kings’ second group. Led by Art Dela Cruz’s eight points in the second quarter, the Kings pulled away from the Hotshots in the win.

“Nahirapan kami sa second group nila,” said Victolero. “Actually, ‘yung second quarter, ganun din nangyari nung eliminations. ‘Yung second quarter ang kailangan naming ayusin. ‘Yun ang quarter na natalo kami.”

“Halos ‘yung first, third, fourth quarter, panalo pa nga ‘yun sa amin. Masama talaga ‘yung laro namin.

Wala sa wisyo, wala sa timing,” said Victolero.

The Hotshots converted only 28 of their 80 shots, with the triumvirate guards Paul Lee, Jio Jalalon, and Mark Barroca converting only seven of their 28 shots combined.

“Open pero ‘yung iba naman, masikip, wala sa rhythm, wala sa timing. Apektado depensa namin dahil siguro ‘yung opensa namin, hindi pumapasok at maraming forced shots. Hindi nagiging solid ‘yung depensa namin. Kailangan naming ayusin,” said Victolero.

All is not lost though for Magnolia as the Hotshots are looking to bounce back in Game Two to be played on Monday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. Magnolia also seeks to draw momentum from its effort late in Game One after the Hotshots were able to trim the deficit to single digits.

“Ang maganda dito, best-of-three. Buhay pa. May pag-asa pa. Kailangan lang namin ayusin ‘yung ilang detalye sa depensa at opensa,” said Victolero.

“That’s our spirit. Laban naman kami. Kailangan lang siguro namin maging close ‘yung game para magkaroon ng chance sa dulo. We need to stay close. ‘Yun ang goal namin,” said Victolero.
