Salud vows action on team officials' decorum on bench after Vargas tirade

    Dec 23, 2014

THERE will be lots of interest in the first PBA board meeting for 2015 as Commissioner Chito Salud vowed to address issues that came out following the heated exchange of words between Talk 'N Text and San Miguel officials regarding officiating in the ongoing Philippine Cup semifinals series.

Salud specifically took note of the concern raised by no less than Talk `N Text governor Ricky Vargas about team officials, more so member of the league board, who regularly sits on the bench during games.

Vargas' remarks were actually aimed at San Miguel counterpart Robert Non, whose presence at the San Miguel bench, let alone heated arguments, during the course of games Vargas claimed intimidates the referees.

“Passions are obviously running high. I encourage restraint at this point. I also took note of issues raised pertaining to team officials sitting on the bench. I will discuss my views and recommendations with the board,” said the commissioner in a statement on Tuesday.

The rant of the top Talk `N Text executive came shortly after Non, the current PBA vice chairman, in a statement, criticized Tropang Texters coach Jong Uichico for his tirade against the referees following the team’s 87-81 loss to the Beermen in Game Two of the series.

The board regularly convenes every last Thursday of the month, although no meeting is expected on the final month of 2014 due to the holiday season.

In the midst of all the tension, Salud appealed for everybody not to be too emotional.

Again, Salud reiterated game officials are mentally, physically, and psychologically prepared once they stepped inside the court to officiate especially in games where the stakes are high such as the semis and finals.

“I assure everyone concerned that game officials are prepped in advance by this office to anticipate this sort of dynamics and hence, are aware and equipped to deal with them as they happen,” he added.
