PBA Board convenes as search for next commissioner gets rolling

    Feb 25, 2015
The PBA Board convenes Thursday to set the criteria that will determine the next commissioner of the league.

THE PBA Board of governors convenes Thursday to finalize the criteria that will determine the successor to commissioner Chito Salud.

League chairman Patrick Gregorio said board members are expected to give their inputs on the matter in the hope of fast-tracking the process.

“Yung criteria ang pagtutuunan namin ng pansin because we know the PBA is bigger now, so maybe, the criteria will change while the different governors will share their own inputs,” Gregorio told Spin.ph on Wednesday.

Salud announced two weeks ago he is stepping down from his post by the end of the season after serving as commissioner for five seasons.

Gregorio said he expects names of possible successor to Salud to crop up during the meeting that begins promptly at 12 noon.

But the chairman said it doesn’t mean the board will be able to immediately arrive at a conclusion.

“I’m sure, some of the board of governors will discuss some of the names, but I just don’t know up to what point nila ia-analyze itong mga names,” he added.

Gregorio reiterated the board intends to make an announcement on Salud’s successor on or before the end of the Commissioner’s Cup.

“There's no turning back as far as that deadline is concerned because it will be good for the new commissioner to be named early while commissioner Chito Salud is there,” he said.

Although the names of cage greats Ramon Fernandez and Sonny Jaworski have cropped up shortly after Salud announced he’s stepping down from his post, sources said the board might also consider the Narvasa brothers Chito and Ogie, as possible candidates.

Chito Narvasa is currently the president of the Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines and previously served as head coach of Purefoods and Shell.

His brother Ogie, on the other hand, served as commissioner of the defunct Philippine Basketball League (PBL) from 1991 to 1992, and later, as league chieftain of the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) from 2000-2001.

Fernandez already took himself out of the equation, saying “he’s done being involved in big-time basketball”.

In recent weeks other possible candidates cropped up including former PBA player turned UAAP commissioner Chito Loyzaga, ex-league governors Lito Alvarez (Air 21), Buddy Encarnado (Sta. Lucia), and JB Baylon (Powerade), and Philippine Sports Commissioner Jolly Gomez.
