Chance for aspiring writers as PBA Press Corps holds 'Willie Caballes Sportswriting Contest'

COLLEGE students looking to embark on a career in sportswriting will have the perfect avenue this school year as the PBA Press Corps holds the “2014 Willie Caballes PBA Sportswriting Contest” on June 15 and 16, the last two play dates of the elimination round of the PLDT Home Telpad Governors’ Cup.

The PBA Press Corps, headed this year by its president Barry Pascua of Bandera, is inviting all college students and campus journalists to take part in this two-day event being supported by the Office of Senator Sonny Angara, sports agent Charlie Dy and the PBA Commissioner’s Office.

Participants will be tested in an actual coverage of a PBA game. They will be allowed to watch a game and attend the post-game interview. The second part of their test is to showcase their abilities in deadline writing as they will be tasked to write their stories based on the actual coverage under a prescribed time limit.

After the two-day competition, the PBA Press Corps’ panel of judges will select the top three winners.

The champion will receive P7,000. Second placer will get P5,000 while the third placer will be given P3,000. All top three winners will likewise get gift certificates from the PBA. They will be honored during the annual PBA Press Corps Awards Night.

Registration for the “2014 Willie Caballes PBA Sportswriting Contest” is now ongoing. Interested participants can call Hazel Ancheta, PR/Liason Officer of the Philippine Basketball Association, at tel. no. 470-2768 to 70 loc. 110.

The PBA Press Corps will accommodate the first 40 participants. Deadline for registration is on June 11.
