EVER wondered why there was no traditional cutting of the net after Barangay Ginebra's PBA Commissioner's Cup championship?
Well, the Gin Kings and their supporters got so caught up in the wild celebration in the aftermath of the title-clinching 93-77 win over San Miguel that they simply forgot to go through one of the timeless rituals in basketball.
Veteran guard Sol Mercado only remembered about it when the team was already celebrating inside its dugout at the Mall of Asia Arena.
"We all got caught up in the moment and forgot," said Mercado in between laughs as he recalled the incident.
Moments before the end of Game 6, Mercado actually came up with a briliant idea that was supposed to have each and every Ginebra player getting his turn of cutting the net during the celebration.
"I wanted all of us to go up there individually and each cut a piece of the net," he said about the plan.
It didn't materialize. But Mercado wouldn't be denied.
With the Kings in the middle of celebrating their second title in the last three conferences, Mercado had the presence of mind to rush out of the dugout and return to the court for that single purpose.
"I wasn't going to leave without it," he said.
