AIR21’s 'De La Salle connection' clicked for the first time this season after Macmac Cardona exploded for a personal conference-high 28 points and Joseph Yeo registering his first PBA career triple-double in the Express’ 109-103 overtime win against Globalport on Christmas Day.
Cardona said that Wednesday night marked the first time he and Yeo played beautiful music together since their La Salle days nearly a decade ago.
“Since college yata, di pa kami nag-sabay ng maganda ang laro. First time lang ito na sabay maganda, triple-double siya tapos ako naman maganda din scoring ko.,” said a beaming Cardona, who delivered the lethal blows near the end of an exciting game at a fullhouse Mall of Asia Arena.
"Happy kami na on Christmas day pa mangyari ito, memorable ito."
While the 6-1 Cardona was scoring over his former Meralco teammate Sol Mercado, who now plays the lead role for Globalport, Yeo was busy with his new role of orchestrating the plays for the Express.
Yeo had 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists for the Express, but admitted the role shift from being a scorer since his high school days to point guard meant a major adjustment as he is still uncomfortable in the playmaking position to this day.
“Sa totoo lang hindi eh (not comfortable playing the point guard role) kasi ako more of umaatake talaga. Eh pag point guard ka kailangan mo intindihin ang mga teammates mo gaya nina KG (Canaleta), Macmac at Asi (Taulava),” said Air21's 'Ninja.'
Yeo felt the numerous close calls the Express had against Petron, Alaska and San Mig Super Coffee during the first round was partly his fault because he is still feeling his way in point guard position.
“Kaya kung minsan, di ko sila napapasahan, nagagalit sila. Eh sinasabi ko nga sa kanila, pasensya na. Siyempre nag-a-adjust pa ako. At least, eventually papasahan ko rin naman sila, kailangan lang intindihin nila nasa adjustment stage din ako dahil di naman ako point guard talaga,” he added.
Yeo and Cardona are hopeful that Air21’s morale-boosting win over Globalport could be a positive sign for them heading to the new year, where Air21 will be back in action on January 4 against Meralco.
