IT is an understatement that Columbian coach Johnedel Cardel is happy with the performance of its import Khapri Alston in the Dyip’s first game in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

The Midwestern State product was a force in the paint as he finished with 38 points and 22 rebounds for the Dyip in their 117-110 win over Alaska on Friday.

“Hindi lang happy. Happy-ing happy,” said Cardel.

After playing in different countries such as England, Chile, and Bolivia, Alston is playing for the first time in the Philippines, and Cardel said the 6-foot-3 import is just what the team needs in the Governors’ Cup.

“Yun ang wala sa team namin, ‘yung pumoposte na go-to guy,” said Cardel. “Even though he is 6-3 and a half, he plays like a 6-10. Ang gusto ko sa kanya, he is a very down-to-earth person, tahimik, pasahan mo o hindi mo pasahan he will play hard. He will talk to the team. The locals love him after three weeks of practice.”

Following his stellar play, Cardel believes Alston still has a lot to give for the Dyip this conference as he is still not yet in game shape.

“Actually, meron pa… He is adjusting to the Filipino way. It’s more tough. With his built, sabi nga niya sa akin hindi pa niya playing weight ‘yun,” said Alston.

Alston admitted he is still not in his preferred weight as he is still at 260 pounds, far from his ideal weight of around 240 to 245 pounds.

“I’m trying to get it now. I took two weeks off prior to coming here because I was playing so long and I have to spend time with my son and my family. I’m working very hard, my teammates and coaches are pushing me and hopefully, continue to get my weight down,” said Alston.

Alston though said he is happy with the team he is playing for as he vowed to be a good teammate to Columbian.

“I always look at the open man. That’s where anybody win. Whoever has the ball, you can always get a better shot for someone who is open. We talked about when I get the ball, be ready to catch, cut, and try my best to find you,” said Alston.
