ROOKIE JP Calvo looks set to take on a big role early in his PBA career with Columbian after starting in Monday’s tune-up game against NorthPort.

Calvo scored eight points and did quite well running some plays in the Dyip’s 97-83 victory on Monday, earning praise from coach Johnedel Cardel.

“Ready naman ako,” said Calvo, when asked about the possibility of being the starter for Columbian. “Talagang nagpapakundisyon ako para dito. Kahit papaano sa PBA, etong Philippine Cup, at least sana ‘yung kakalabasan ng laro naming is maganda.”

Cardel is confident the 11th overall pick in the 2018 PBA draft has what it takes to be the starting playmaker.

“Calvo kasi is a pure point guard,” Cardel said. “He is a natural point guard. I give my confidence to him. Sabi ko sa kanya, this is the problem of the team before. I don’t have a pure point guard. You are the one na makakapagdala dito. Even though you are small, you have a big heart. Okay sa akin ‘yun.”

Calvo said he is working hard to repay Cardel’s trust.

The former Letran Knights guard said he is not pressured at all by the big role Cardel has given to him.

Calvo admitted it was difficult to assert himself as a point guard being a rookie, but feels he has the support of his teammates.

Okay ‘yung samahan namin,” said Calvo.

‘Yun ang kailangan kong paghandaan,” said Calvo.

Calvo is also glad to team up with former NCAA rival and top draft pick CJ Perez.

“Okay naman kaming dalawa. Kasi lagi kaming nag-uusap at ‘yung samahan namin, everytime na pumupunta kami sa practice, nag-uusap talaga kami. At least, nag-cocomplement kami. Sana tuluy-tuloy pagdating sa PBA,” said Calvo.
