GLOBALPORT banked on its lethal one-two punch in a 101-78 manhandling of Blackwater on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum to move above .500 in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Rising local star Terrence Romeo and import Calvin Warner conspired as the Batang Pier broke the game wide open early en route to their fourth win in seven games, while handing the Elite their fifth loss in six games.
Romeo took most of the cudgels on offense with 25 points, while Warner anchored the Batang Pier’s defense with 30 rebounds—both a league season-high and franchise-record—on top of 17 points.
Ronjay Buenafe was not to be outdone as the veteran gunner added 17 points in just three quarters, including two on a rare left-handed breakaway dunk for Globalport, which notched back-to-back blowout victories after hammering Barako Bull, 99-81, last time.
“We don’t settle for mediocrity, kasi walang mahinang team sa PBA,” said Batang Pier coach Eric Gonzales, whose team turned a nip-and-tuck first quarter into a rout after building a double-digit lead at halftime.
There was nothing mediocre about Globalport’s performance as the squad in the middle of the pack collared a whopping 75 rebounds, 29 more than the Elite, a department that spelled the biggest difference.
Warner was a huge part of their rebounding. One of the American’s slotman’s boards was on the offensive end, putting back a Jewel Ponferrada miss with a reverse slam that gave the Batang Pier their biggest lead at 90-63.
Marcus Douthit registered 19 points and 17 rebounds, four assists, and one block, while Brian Heruela chipped in 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting and seven assists, but Bryan Faundo, supposedly the Elite’s most consistent player, was limited to just six boards and four points, missing all but two of his 10 shots.
