LOOKING for something different in the new batch of Gilas Pilipinas? Why not tap energetic power forward Calvin Abueva as point guard.

No less than the man who discovered and nurtured the career of Abueva, Dennis Pineda, made the novel suggestion, saying the playmaking skills of the Alaska Aces star is one untapped potential in his game.

Yung puso ni Calvin No. 1 na panglaban rin natin yan sa Gilas,” said Pineda, who is the vice governor of Pampanga.

The amazing season Pineda was referring to came in 2012 when the hard-nosed forward was utilized as San Sebastian’s chief playmaker and led the league in points (20.26 ppg), rebounds (16.47 rpg), and assist (6.21 aspg), respectively.

Since turning pro as the No. 2 overall pick of Alaska, Pineda hasn’t seen Abueva play the point. But he insists his ward can be an asset for Gilas in the point guard position.

Abueva sounded unsure when asked about the suggestion made by his longtime patron.

Pero kaya naman siguro,” Abueva said with a laugh.

During his time playing the point for the Stags, Abueva said he has learned to adopt the pass-first mentality.

'Pag sinabi nilang sagasa, eh aatake talaga ko,” added the 27 year old.

Alaska assistant coach Louie Alas acknowledged knowing for a long time about Abueva’s playmaking skills, having seen him play as a 'point forward' in the NCAA back when he was coach of San Sebastian’s fierce rival Letran.

“Alam namin talent ni Calvin sa point, kaso iba kasi ang play namin sa Alaska ngayon, guard heavy, tapos last time (under Luigi Trillo), strict triangle offense kami,” said Alas.

Kasi malaki at matapang. Advantage yan lalo pa sa Gilas, may mga aasahan siya at pwedeng i-set-up sa scoring,” said the multi-titled former NCAA coach.

Former San Beda guard and Gilas cadet member Garvo Lanete believes Abueva will be a good fit at off-guard and small forward spots, though he does know about the Alaska stalwart’s capability as a playmaker.

Pwede 'yan kung susubukan,” he added.

Of course, everything still depends on the coaching staff of Gilas led by Tab Baldwin, who doesn't hide his admiration for Abueva who he labelled a real 'gamer.'
