CALVIN Abueva was quick to shrug off the ankle injury that forced him to sit out the endgame in Alaska’s stunning 100-92 loss to NLEX Wednesday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The star forward got entangled with Alex Mallari late in the fourth quarter but appeared to twist his ankle by his lonesome before going down in pain.
He was later replaced and never returned, watching from the sidelines as the Aces absorbed a fifth straight setback after winning their first four games in the mid-season tournament.
Abueva walked with an obvious limp after emerging from the Alaska dugout, going straight to the parking lot of the Big Dome without talking to any of the media men around.
Deputy coach Louie Alas said the injury wasn’t serious enough for a player as tough as ‘The Beast.’
“I don’t think na grabe yung injury. Ipapag-pag lang ni Calvin yun,” he said.
Despite the injury, the former San Sebastian stalwart still managed to score 12 points (5 of 11 shooting) and had nine rebounds, and two assists in 23 minutes of play. He however, committed five turnovers.
The Aces expect him to suit up in Alaska’s crucial game against San Miguel on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
