ALASKA star Calvin Abueva brushed off the hard elbow planted on him by San Miguel’s Ryan Arana in their Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup game Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
While admitting he got hurt during the skirmish to end the first quarter action that led to Arana's outright ejectin for a Flagrant Foul 2, Abueva said the important thing is that the Aces got away with the win, 103-97.
“At least ‘yung trabaho ko, nagawa ko,” said the four-year pro. “Di ko iniisip na sinadya ‘yun, ang akin nanalo kami sa game na ‘to.”
Abueva finished with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds in helping the Aces tie Rain or Shine in second place with an 8-2 (win-loss) slate and a shot at a possible playoff for an outright semifinal berth.
For a while, the former San Sebastian stalwart appeared in trouble after getting elbowed in the mouth by Arana as the two tried to position themselves during a rebound play.
Abueva laid on the floor for a few minutes writhing in pain as he covered his mouth with both hands.
He later shrugged off the incident with Arana, who he said is a friend off the court.
“Ok lang, wala naman ‘yun,” said the pride of Balibago, Angeles, Pampanga.
“Trabaho lang,” he said. “Lagi naman kami nagkikita niyan eh. Friends kami niyan. Sa court, ‘di lang maiiwasan ‘yung ganun (pisikalan).”
