CALVIN Abueva is on the verge of winning a long-overduePBA Best Player of the Conference award.

But that's not what's occupying his mind right now.

With Alaska on survival mode in the Commissioner's Cup Finals against Rain or Shine, the thought of being recognized as the best local player in the mid-season tournament is far from the mind of the enigmatic power forward.

Remember the Aces' mantra of 'We Not Me.'

"Hindi ko muna iniisip yun," said Abueva on the eve of the awards ceremony, which will take place before Game Four on Wednesday - a must-win for the Aces if they are to stay alive in the face of a 0-3 deficit.

"Ang focus ko ngayon nasa Game Four. Yun muna sa ngayon," said the Alaska forward.

Abueva finished third in the statistical race for the BPC plum through the semifinals with his 32.7 SPs, lagging behind Ginebra's Greg Slaughter (34.2 SPs) and Terrence Romeo of GlobalPort (33.0 SPs).

Still, there's the votes among media, players, and the PBA to consider, although the Alaska star seemed to be the consensus choice of reporters covering the beat.

Informed about it, there's a tinge of excitement that came out of his voice although not totally to the point of contradicting hia earlier statement.

"Pero kung ibibiggay sa akin bakit hindi," he said. "Tsaka para na rin kay Mama (Nanay Sionny)."
