CALVIN Abueva was rushed to the hospital after suffering from neck spasm following an inadvertent hit from rookie Sedrick Barefiled in the first half of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup game between Magnolia and Blackwater.
The incident which happened with seven minutes left in the second quarter saw Barefield accidentally elbow Abueva while trying to intercept a pass, sending the ‘Beast’ sprawling to the floor of the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

He spent some 15 minutes lying down before being taken out in a stretcher with a brace placed over his neck.
A neck spasm is described as the sudden and involuntary tightening of the neck muscles that can cause pain and stiffnes.
The veteran forward was later brought to the Manila Doctors Hospital, accompanied by his worried family.

The Hotshots held a 38-31 advantage with 7:18 left before halftime when the incident took place.
Abueva, 36, had two points and three rebounds in five minutes of action when he exited the game for good.
As per initial diagnosis of league physician Dr. Wendell Lozano, Abueva was able to move his legs, thereby discounting any possible damage on his spine.
