CALVIN Abueva had a brief goodbye message to Magnolia following a trade that wound him at NorthPort on Tuesday.
“byemags” was what the enigmatic Abueva wrote on his Instagram story just moments after the trade became official and announced by the PBA.

In the trade, Abueva along with Jerrick Balanza and Magnolia’s 51st Season second round pick were acquired by NorthPort in exchange of William Navarro.

The trade ends the 37-year-old Abueva’s four-year stint with Magnolia, his second longest tenure in a team after his six-year career with Alaska where he became a Rookie of the Year during the 2012-13 season.
Abueva was acquired by Magnolia at a time when he was fresh from an 18-month suspension by the league for a clothesline hit against TNT import Terrence Jones during the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup.
It was also at Magnolia where he won his second Best Player of the Conference trophy in the 2021 Philippine Cup though he came up short in his title aspirations that tournament where the Hotshots were defeated by TNT in the Bacolor bubble.
Ironically, Abueva’s last game for Magnolia was against NorthPort in Candon, Ilocos Sur last Saturday where he finished with eight points, three rebounds, and four assists.
There was also an incident in that game when he was assessed for a flagrant foul penalty one for hitting, co-incidentally, Navarro on the face.
He recently shifted his jersey number to 73, a change in mindset as he wanted to play like Dennis Rodman for the Hotshots.
Abueva averaged 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in his final conference with Magnolia in the Philippine Cup.
